The East Indians are the original inhabitants of Mumbai (Mobai in their dialect). Manori is part of the original settlement of East Indians long before the Portuguese and British rule. The locals speak Marathi.

Nothing much has changed on the island of Manori. The churches are much as they were in the 16th century, when the Portuguese settled in this area. The simple folk who live in the island’s four picturesque villages still go out fishing to sea in their long-prowed boats. On an early morning walk through the sylvan, palm- fringed countryside of the island, you will see brightly clad village women on their way to the well to fill urns with water for the day.

Although Manori island is part of Mumbai, you would never know; the lush farmlands, plantations, lotus ponds and paddy fields are reminiscent of Goa. So close to the city and yet blissfully tucked away. The local East – Indian village and the culture that surrounds us and the nearby attractions give you plenty to do and see.

With Christian, Portuguese and Hindu influences dating back to the 16th Century, Manori is a charming village by the seaside. Home to the local fishing and farming communities - Kolis, Kunbis and Bhandaris, the local atmosphere is similar to that of Goa. The beach, narrow roads and overall culture provide visitors a mini-Goa like experience within touching distance of Mumbai - making it a very popular weekend getaway for many.

A typical Koli house consists of a veranda, used for repairing nets and receiving visitors; a sitting-room (angan), used by women for household work; a kitchen, a central apartment, a bedroom, a devotional room (devaghar) and a detached bathroom. the village is characterised by old homes in eye catching colours, with exterior staircases. The narrow bylanes give visitors a good introduction to the village as they drive to their destination or the beach.

East Indian food has unique flavours, a lot of it emanating from the famed bottle masala which could include as many as 60 individual spices in a "secret" recipe handed down through the generations, which elevates any fish or meat dish.

The fishing heritage focuses on fresh sea food including fried pomfret, fish curry and Kolambi (prawn) most using the famed bottle masala. East Indian chicken curry, Sorpotel, Vindaloo are enjoyed with the rice flatbread, Fugias (a home-made fried yeasted bread) and Sanaa, (a home-made rice, coconut and toddy bread)
